American Legion’s National Emergency Fund

Trained OB/GYN and former Navy commander Dr. Steven Raheb earned his medical degree from Georgetown University before completing his residency and internship at the US Naval Hospital in San Diego. Dr. Steven Raheb is also affiliated with several community-service organizations, such as Rotary International and the American Legion.

Established through a congressional act in 1919, the American Legion is a veteran-focused organization that operates across all 50 states. The Legion delivers diverse programs to support veterans and their families. The National Emergency Fund provides direct financial assistance to veterans impacted by natural disasters.

The fund was created in response to the damage and aftermath of Hurricane Hugo, a category 5 storm that devastated the South Carolina coast. Over the past 30 years, the fund has disbursed more than $8 million in grants. Individual veterans and veterans associations can apply for recovery funds. Eligibility requirements for National Emergency Fund grants include active members, veteran status, and the loss of a primary home.
